Reins is a privacy-focused interface for running large language models locally on iOS and iPadOS. It supports connections to Ollama, LM Studio, and any OpenAI-compatible server, allowing users to manage multiple endpoints and API keys. Alternatively, it can run models directly on Apple Silicon devices using the MLX framework, including support for Apple Intelligence’s foundation models. The app provides advanced features such as web searching without API keys, tool use for calculation and reasoning, and ‘thinking mode’ for deeper analysis. Users can attach images, PDFs, CSVs, and text files to chats, branch conversations, and resume cut-off responses. Fine-grained controls allow adjustment of system prompts, temperature, context size, and max tokens per conversation. Background processing ensures generation continues even when the app is minimized or the screen is locked (requiring iOS/iPadOS 26.0+). No login or data collection is required for local usage.
