Glance is a translation utility designed for iOS and macOS that emphasizes privacy and user control over the underlying AI models. Unlike many competitors, it does not use its own proprietary model or require a subscription; instead, it allows users to bring their own OpenRouter API key or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. This approach lets users choose their preferred AI model and pay only for usage without markup.

The app supports multiple input methods: users can type or paste plain text for instant auto-translation, capture screenshots or photos where Glance highlights detected text before translating, and use the built-in keyboard to translate drafts within other applications without switching contexts. A share sheet integration also allows sending text or images from anywhere on the device.

Privacy is central to Glance’s design. The OpenRouter API key is stored securely in the iOS Keychain. Image processing happens on-device first; cloud models are only invoked if on-device reading fails. Translation history and associated images remain on the device, with automatic deletion options based on user-defined retention periods. The keyboard operates without Full Access permissions for typing, requiring it only to send text for translation, ensuring drafts and output are not stored in history.

Users can customize language pairs, switch translation directions with one tap, and pin frequently used languages to the top of the menu. Recent translations are saved for easy retrieval but can be cleared manually. The app is free to download, with costs incurred only through the user’s external API provider.
