Local Chat enables users to run the latest open-source language models directly on Mac, iPad, and iPhone hardware. By processing data locally, the application ensures that chat interactions remain completely private and require no internet connection. Users can download various model sizes from the open-source community, including Llama, Gemma, Qwen, Mistral, DeepSeek, and Kimi, selecting options that best fit their device’s capabilities.

The app supports chat history management, allowing users to save conversations or delete them automatically. Saved histories are synced across devices using private iCloud storage. For earlier Apple devices without sufficient local processing power, users can still view history synced from compatible devices. A key feature is the ability to customize the chatbot’s personality through system prompts, enabling roles such as a helpful assistant, encouraging coach, or witty conversationalist. The software is designed for Mac (M1 and later), iPhone 12 and later, and specific iPad generations, offering a self-contained AI experience without relying on external cloud services.
