Users can engage with their learning community by sending messages, joining class discussions, and collaborating with peers in real time. The app supports learning activities such as submitting various file types (PDFs, docs, media) for teacher annotation via SpeedGrader, taking quizzes, and streaming video lectures.

A significant feature is offline accessibility; users can download full courses to continue studying without an internet connection. The app also emphasizes inclusivity with dark mode support and VPAT 2.2 compliance for built-in accessibility features. Additionally, it integrates with classroom tools (LTIs) and supports lifelong learning programs, including career-focused skill-based learning experiences enhanced by AI-powered features.

Note that teaching and grading functions are reserved for the separate Canvas Teacher app. The platform is trusted by over 40 million learners worldwide.
